Bow Networks Press Release: December 20, 2002
CALGARY, AB -- Bow Networks announced today that Tacoma Power has selected its eLAN communications platform for a comprehensive communications project, to provide open, flexible access to all substation and distribution devices, from any authorized user or application.
"The project, dubbed SDI (Substation Data Integration) will provide an open, secure, modern framework for accessing data in all our transmission substation and distribution facility IEDs, from a multitude of control center and enterprise applications," said Joe Orth, Senior Special Project Manager for Tacoma Power. "The key to any good solution is offering a customer focused organization with the intellectual property and knowledgeable staff willing to present solutions using a variety of tools and approaches to resolve the wide array of security and communications issues that face all utilities. Bow worked with all Tacoma Power's stakeholders in the process of developing a solution, which addressed many serious deficiencies in the security and data integrity of our existing IEDs."
Bow Networks introduced its eLAN platform in response to the trend toward the use of corporate intranets and the internet for communicating substation data cost-effectively to many departmental users.
Bow Networks’ President, Jeff Gill explains, “Tacoma Power is a forward thinking utility that has put in place a communications infrastructure that allows them to leverage their existing investment in automation. Our eLAN technology was built around the idea of using networks to solve communications and integration issues. We are pleased to have a partner in Tacoma who shares this philosophy.”
Site acceptance testing for the project has recently been completed, and the eLAN servers will be placed in service at three of TPWR's sites in Q1, 2003.
A more complete description of the project is available at http://www.bownetworks.com/downloads/tacoma.pdf
Bow Networks is pleased to announce the release of the SEL Fast Message Protocol module, for our IED Manager application. Fast Message Protocol will allow our eLAN platform to gather data real time and historical data, including oscillography files, from most SEL relays.
Bow's eLAN IED Manager (IEDM) provides a powerful, modular data acquisition and protocol translation package targeted at the wide range of data types available in a modern IED. IED Manager was specifically designed to handle complex or large data structures, such as reports, fault records and power quality measurements.
