IED Anywhere Provides Desktop Connectivity to Remote IEDs
BOW Networks is pleased to introduce the IED Anywhere application for remote IED communications. As the number of Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) and the information they generate proliferates within the utility industry, unlocking their potential has become an increasing priority. IED Anywhere is one of several eLAN enabled communications applications that is aimed at addressing many of the issues that are presented in enabling access to these devices for the purposes of configuration, maintenance and data retrieval.
IED Anywhere Benefits
- Allows for relay, RTU or meter configuration from any remote location using the device's native application and protocol, eliminating the need to send technicians to the field
- Provides a single point of connection to all IEDs, reducing the overall time to configure
- Supplies instantaneous access to device information otherwise downloaded intermittently
- Central administration of all communications sessions provides better control and elimination of errors related to internal coordination
- Supports any Windows-based application expecting to connect through Com1 or Com2
- Supports the running of multiple IED configuration applications on a single server, reducing version release coordination and administrative costs associated with maintaining multiple copies
IED Anywhere Feature Overview
IED Anywhere is an eLAN application that provides a means of establishing a connection between a host application and an IED over a public or private network. IED Anywhere allows the host application to interface with the IED as if it was directly connected to the device's serial interface. The IED Anywhere connection is established via an intermediate eLAN Substation Gateway, resident in the substation and accessible over the network using the device's native protocol. This intermediate eLAN Gateway provides the physical serial connection to the IED.
IED Anywhere Substation Gateway
eLAN is an open communications architecture supported by the Linux operating system, allowing it to run on a range of hardware platforms commonly available from industrial computer suppliers. The IED Anywhere Substation Gateway has a minimum configuration requirement that allows for reliable communication.
Typical Hardware Configuration for IED Anywhere Gateway
- Industrial Rack Mount Chassis, passive backplane, slide rails
- Minimum 233 MHz Pentium CPU
- Dual 10/100 Base T Ethernet
- 256 MB RAM, 256k Cache
- 128 MB Flash disk drive
- 2-96 serial ports using Intelligent Communications Processor modules

Optional eLAN Applications
Security Modules
Implementing a robust security scheme is a complex, specialized task, which must be approached from the corporate IT level. The eLAN family contains the following list of security components, which may be selected and deployed based on the Utility's own security philosophy and operating practices.
- TLS - Transport Layer Security (SSL 3.0)
- VPN - Virtual Private Networking
- PKI - Public Key Infrastructure
- Firewall
- SSH - Secure Shell
When implemented with IED Anywhere, a secure environment for device maintenance and configuration is ensured.
eLAN: The Future of Substation Data Management
